Canvassing sleeves and trousers

I've heard it mentioned this used to be done; as an experiment I canvassed the bottom of my trousers up to my knees and was shocked how well it worked- no more ripples or unsightly breaks, especially at the back of the calves where my tailors always have problems.  Anybody know anything more about this practice?

Interesting, Iv'e never seen this. I'm assuming the trousers are lined? Care to post some pics? Interlining the might offer a similar result and would not be so delicate to wash or could stand up to general wear and tear a little better.

Never heard of it myself, but would it not also make you look artifically stiff?  Also it would add enormously to the weight of the garment you'd think.
