Could anyone please help with this: an order book refers to a dress coat with 'black silk linings and silk pleats'. Is the phrase 'silk pleats' a reference to the lining of the tails which are, in a sense pleated?

The back of the tails are pleated. So I would say it refers to the tails.

Often with tailcoats, the expensive silk portion is restricted to the facings. Once you go beyond that it is common to find a more standard lining being used.
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): "Tradition ist die Weitergabe des Feuers und nicht die Anbetung der Asche."

"Tradition is about passing on the flame, and not the worshipping of ashes"

Thank you, Sator. I am sure that this is right. The coat was made, by Poole, for the last Emperor of Brazil and the information is relevant to a book that a Brazilian friend is writing about his wardrobe. He has to translate the references in the order book into Portuguese so that's why it is important to get it right - and where else to be as sure of such a detail as here? :clapping:
