Oh yes, his smoking jackets are amazing. I'd love to find this kind of Art Deco silk.
When you say Art Deco silk do you mean the velvet of the jacket or the lapel facing?

6. The Thomas Crown affair (from 1968 with Steve McQueen)
I havenīt seen the film in a long time now,, but as I remember I was shouting out loudly to the tv everytime great Faye Dunaway showed with a new outfit on the screen. I could have killed the tailor!! (I hope I donīt mix it up with another film right now, but I donīt think)
Soo - funny that you mention, I donīt recall Steve McQueens wardrobe. Maybe you ment his garments. Hers were disappointingly fitted.

Edith Head comes to my mind. She has supported many, many films back in the 50s and 60s (like Sabrina) with her designs. The Clou would also be a tip. (As many others, see here)

Edith Head: Now that I saw the picture of her I think she was the model for the fashion designer "Edna" in "The Incredibles".

From the Wikipedia page:
Quote To many viewers of the 2004 Pixar/Disney computer-animated film The Incredibles, the personality and mannerisms of the film's fictional superhero costume designer Edna Mode suggest a colorful caricature of Edith Head. Edna Mode's sense of style, round glasses, and assertive no-nonsense character are very likely a direct homage to Head's legendary accomplishments and personal traits. But the film's director, Brad Bird, has not yet confirmed or denied this.
Other than recreations of the past, has there been any modern movie with really great costumes? Many modern films use the sponsored garments provided by RTW companies. Brioni used their participation in some of the latest Bond- movies to promote the brand, as did Tom Ford.

She's actually great: look at this perfect fit (ok with stretch fabric but still...)
(baby garment is not that good but he's growing so fast anyway that it's no use to spend time on fitting... )

Lapel facing. Velvet is a well-know question : easy to find OK velvet, damn hard to find really beautiful one, nearly impossible to find silk velvet.

Not bad. Once again, the key to arm ease of move is the very high armhole
That said, it's hollywood style again. T-shirts and skin-tights trousers. There use to be a time when super-heroes went to their tailor at Savile Row to have their coats and breeches made for them. With action pleats and pivot sleeves for real confort of movement.
Of course, that was before Superman started to wear his underwear over his trousers*... Men had real style then...
* Actually, when they saw this, some doctors tried to keep him in a mental health institution. The fact that him claimed to come from an alien planet named Krypton was another clue about his psychosis. But, him being Superman, they couldn't keep him in, so after he demolished the third building, they voted to just let him go his way.

I remember the hilarious scene in which the mother (voiced by Holly Hunter, I think), walks by a mirror, catches sight of her middle-aged body in spandex and sighs.
Dignity. Always, dignity. (Singin' in the Rain)

Lipstick Jungle. The wardrobe was by many different haute couture designers. And I really love the series "the avengers", some of the early garments were made by Valentino. (This I like to watch because of the great humor, too:))
Ah yes and there is this Wallstreet film with Michael Douglas, where they transformed his body to that dinky-style. They have put absolutely invisible shoulderpads even into his shirts, so that he looks more aggressive (he has very narrow shoulders in real).
