I was rather bemused by this letter to the editors of The Cutter and Tailor published on May 1, 1953. The advice remains pertinent even today.

Sending her on errands to pick up expensive items will cost you dearly.

She'd only go if she had to pick up something else for herself - so it already would be costing dearly...

My gravest fear would be that it would put her in the position of asking at the store: "how much did that cost my husband?" Straight Face.gif

Response: "Actually, madam, sir said that you would be settling the account and that's three dozen hand-rolled, finest lawn handkerchiefs at 75.00 a piece - one moment, madam - that's a mere 2,700."

That's got the makings of a proper argument - but at least they'd be arguing over something truly worthwhile for once!! Moreover, I am sure that his 'value for money' argument will win her round in the end...

...and here, the handbags which do not match anything but were so "cute".

We will not mention the lingerie drawer, for while it contains small , flimsy things which were very expensive, for some reason we find that they are not upsetting.
