This article about academic dress for success rules in the college professor hiring market was fascinating. For me, the key sentence was:

 

Scholars hunting for jobs are expected to look far better than those who have one, says ... an English professor ... . ‘I wonder if the emphasis on appearance at the hiring level isn’t a displacement of the real issue: that these students aren’t going to get jobs. We focus on their clothing as if the perfect suit or haircut, or the toning down of extravagant styles, will guarantee them a job.’ Alas, she says, it won’t.

 

It's also why I take style guide and grooming articles with a grain of salt.  It's still often the economy, stupid.
